What are the fields
of application of aerodynamics?
Historically the first field of application for CFD, sometimes referred to as a numerical wind tunnel, external aerodynamics makes it possible to study airflow around a body in detail, whatever the flow regime or velocity.
Often associated with the automotive and aeronautical sectors, aerodynamics also has many applications in the building and structural engineering sectors.

Different types of data can be obtained through CFD calculations in aerodynamics, depending on the issue being studied, whether structural or comfort-related.
Velocity profiles and pressure coefficients are the main values extracted in order to assess the loads acting on the body being studied and to validate its resistance to wind.
Streamlines and velocity fields make it possible to visualise the flow and identify areas of strong and weak air circulation. This means that potential draughts and recirculation zones can be limited in order to improve comfort for users, including pollutant and hot air plume dispersion, heat removal from urban heat islands, and the reduction of air velocity and “canyon” effects.
Based on these results, it is also possible to propose optimisation measures, which can then be simulated in turn.
