Having worked with stakeholders in the sector for around ten years, we have built up solid experience in using simulations to address the issues inherent in the operation of datacenters.

Datacenters require the installation of substantial cooling capacity in order to remove the heat generated by servers. Cooling systems are subject to technical and environmental constraints that may affect their performance.

CFD simulations make it possible to study the issues inherent in the operation of datacenters, such as the management of outdoor hot air exhausts, the correct distribution of cold air indoors, or the system’s response to load peaks.

Simulations to prevent
reduced performance in rooftop cooling

The removal of heat stored by the datacenter cooling circuit depends on the optimal operation of the chillers located outside the building. This operation can be impaired by unfavourable conditions that can be reproduced through simulation.

CFD simulations of the plumes discharged by rooftop chillers make it possible to identify potential hot air recirculation and therefore implement corrective solutions.

Temperatures at the air inlets of the chillers can also be recorded under normal or extreme operating conditions, such as prevailing wind, heatwaves or high thermal loads, in order to anticipate any potential deterioration in cooling performance.

Simulations to maximise
server cooling efficiency

The correct distribution of cold air in server rooms ensures their optimal operation. The presence of potential hot spots along cold aisles and plenums can be identified through internal modelling of server rooms.

Transient simulations can also be carried out in order to track the evolution of air temperature in the room over time, for several operating scenarios or air-conditioning failure scenarios. This makes it possible to anticipate the behaviour of the planned cooling system and test its robustness.

1D simulations make it possible to quickly assess the response of the entire cooling system under different CPU load variation scenarios.

Finally, several series of 3D or 1D simulations can be carried out in order to test and validate modifications to the cooling concepts selected for this type of installation.
