As part of the renovation of complete ventilation systems, thermal comfort studies are regularly requested, and simulations supporting the conclusions presented are increasingly being sought.

Thanks to our expertise and our STD and CFD tools, we are able to study the many aspects of thermal comfort, such as:

  • the thermal behaviour of a building, including heating and cooling requirements;
  • the comfort perceived by occupants or visitors, including air temperature and velocity, humidity levels, PMV, PPD, etc.;
  • or the airflow study of the various systems, such as air diffusers, air distribution ducts, destratification fans, radiant panels, etc.

The data obtained from the simulations is then used to estimate the performance of the selected HVAC systems.

The different types of simulations

In order to respond precisely to the various issues related to thermal comfort, our engineering consultancy uses several simulation codes to analyse different phenomena:

STD simulations make it possible to assess annual requirements, as well as the changes over time in various variables, such as temperature and sunlight, according to a wide range of input parameters. In this case, the overall behaviour of a building is studied.

CFD simulations make it possible to study in detail the behaviour of specific spaces where natural convection may be significant, as well as different ventilation concepts under specific climatic conditions.

These two types of simulations are complementary, and a combined interpretation of these approaches is ideal for gaining a better understanding of the thermal behaviour of the areas studied, regardless of the project stage, whether AVP, PRO or EXE.
